About Typing Speed Test
A typing test measures how fast you can accurately reproduce text, expressed in words per minute. The convention counts a word as five characters, which is why WPM is comparable across languages and word lengths. This test runs for sixty seconds and counts only words typed correctly — raw speed with errors is not a useful number, because in real work every mistake costs more time to fix than it saved.
How to Play
Tap the input and type the highlighted word, then press space.
Type the highlighted word and press space to move on.
Objective & Winning Rules
Type as many words correctly as you can in sixty seconds.
Typing Speed Test Rules
The test lasts sixty seconds, beginning on your first keystroke rather than when the page loads, so getting settled costs nothing.
Words are presented one at a time with the current one highlighted. Pressing space submits the word and advances. A word counts only if it matches exactly — a typo, a missing letter or wrong capitalisation all mean it does not count, and there is no partial credit.
Your score is net words per minute: correct words divided by elapsed minutes. Because only correct words count, accuracy and speed are not separate measurements here. Typing fast and sloppily produces a lower number than typing slightly slower and cleanly.
Typing Speed Test Strategy
Accuracy is speed
This is the counterintuitive core of typing. Because errors do not count, a person typing at 70 WPM with 98% accuracy beats a person typing at 90 WPM with 85% accuracy. In real work the gap is wider still, because a mistake costs the time to notice it, go back, and fix it. Slowing down until you stop making errors almost always raises the number.
Learn home row properly rather than typing faster
Hunt-and-peck typists plateau around 40 WPM because their eyes have to leave the text to find keys. Touch typing from the home row removes that entirely and its ceiling is several times higher. If you are below 50 WPM, learning finger placement will do more than any amount of practising the way you already type.
Keep your eyes on the upcoming words
Fast typists read ahead — their hands are typing one word while their eyes are already on the next two. Watching your own fingers, or watching the word you are currently typing, caps you at reacting rather than flowing. The habit is uncomfortable to build and worth more than any other single change.
Do not look at the WPM counter
Watching your own score mid-test is a reliable way to lower it. Attention spent on the number is attention not spent reading ahead, and seeing a dip tends to cause tensing, which causes more errors, which causes a further dip. The counter is there so you can see progress across attempts, not so you can monitor yourself during one. Look at the words, and check the result when the minute is over.
Fix your posture before your technique
Wrists floating, shoulders raised, or a keyboard at the wrong height all cost speed and cause fatigue within the minute. Flat wrists, relaxed shoulders and light key presses are worth several WPM immediately and are the difference between a test you can repeat and one that leaves your hands aching.

Typing Speed Test — Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 WPM is average for an adult. 60 to 80 is a competent professional standard, above 100 is fast, and sustained speeds beyond 120 are rare outside people who type for a living.
How is WPM calculated?
A word is defined as five characters, and your score is correct words divided by elapsed minutes. The five-character convention is what makes WPM comparable regardless of how long the actual words are.
Does this count my mistakes?
Only by excluding them. A word that does not match exactly simply does not count toward your score, so the number you get is net speed rather than raw keystrokes.
Why is my score lower than on other tests?
Different tests use different conventions — some report raw WPM including errors, some use different word lists, some run for different durations. Compare a score only against other scores from the same test.
Can I take this on a phone?
You can, but the number will be much lower and is not really comparable. Thumb typing and touch typing are different skills; mobile typing speeds are typically a third to a half of keyboard speeds.
How do I get faster?
Accuracy first, then touch typing from the home row, then reading ahead. Practising the same flawed technique faster mostly builds fatigue.
