About Number Memory Test
Number memory measures the phonological loop: the part of working memory that holds verbal and numeric information for a few seconds while you use it. A digit string is shown briefly, then hidden, and you type it back. Get it right and the next string is one digit longer. The level you fail at is your digit span, and it is one of the oldest and best-studied measures in cognitive psychology.
How to Play

Objective & Winning Rules
Recall the longest digit string you can, one digit at a time.
Number Memory Test Rules
A random digit string is displayed for a duration that scales with its length — roughly a second plus a little under a second per digit — then hidden. You type what you saw and submit.
A correct answer advances you one level and adds one digit. A single incorrect answer ends the test, and your score is the last level you completed successfully, not the one you failed.
Digits are generated randomly each time, so there is no pattern to learn across attempts and no way to carry an answer from one run to the next. Only exact matches count: a transposed pair is as wrong as a blank.
Number Memory Test Strategy
Chunk the digits into groups
The single most effective technique, and the reason phone numbers are written in blocks. Working memory holds a limited number of items, but an item can be a group rather than a single digit. Reading 4 8 2 9 1 7 as 'four-eighty-two, ninety-one, seven' turns six items into three, and most people gain two to four digits of span the first time they try it deliberately.
Rehearse out loud, or nearly so
The phonological loop is an auditory store, which is why saying the digits under your breath holds them better than looking at them harder. Subvocal rehearsal keeps the string cycling while you type. It also explains why background speech is far more disruptive to this test than background music.
Type immediately, do not admire the number
The trace decays in seconds. Every moment spent checking whether you are confident is a moment the earlier digits are fading. Begin typing the instant the string disappears — hesitation costs more span than a moment's extra study would ever buy.
Attach meaning where you can
A run that happens to be a year, an age, or a familiar sequence stops being random data and becomes a single item. Practised competitors extend this into full mnemonic systems that map digit pairs to images, which is how memory athletes reach spans in the dozens.
Expect around seven, and do not read too much into it
The classic finding puts short-term span at roughly seven items plus or minus two, and most adults land near that here. Treat it as a benchmark of one narrow capacity measured under artificial conditions, not as a statement about intelligence or about memory in general. People who score poorly on digit span are frequently excellent at remembering faces, routes or arguments, because those draw on entirely different systems.

Number Memory Test — Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good number memory score?
Most adults reach somewhere between six and nine digits. Reaching ten or more usually means you are chunking deliberately rather than holding raw digits.
What is digit span?
The longest sequence of digits you can repeat back correctly. It is one of the oldest measures in cognitive psychology and forms part of several standard intelligence assessments.
Why does everyone score around seven?
Because that is roughly the capacity of short-term memory for unrelated items — the well-known 'seven plus or minus two' finding. It is a limit on how many separate things you can hold, not on how much information, which is exactly why chunking works.
Can I improve my digit span?
Yes, substantially, but mostly through technique rather than raw capacity. Chunking and mnemonic systems can carry a practised person far beyond their untrained span; the underlying store does not grow much.
Does this measure intelligence?
No. Digit span correlates weakly with some cognitive measures but is far too narrow to say anything meaningful about a person. Treat it as a benchmark of one specific capacity.
Why did the number disappear so quickly?
The display time scales with length so that longer strings get proportionally more time. The limit is deliberately recall rather than reading speed.

Visual Memory Test
Remember which squares lit up.
A pattern of squares flashes, then vanishes. Click them all back. The grid grows as you go — three mistakes and it ends.

Verbal Memory Test
Seen this word before, or is it new?
Words appear one at a time. Say whether you have seen each one already in this run. Three mistakes and it is over.

Spot the square that is a slightly different shade.
One square in the grid is a fraction lighter than the rest. Find it. The difference shrinks and the grid grows as you climb.
