About Spacebar Counter
A spacebar speed test measures how many times you can press the space bar inside a fixed window. It became popular through games where space is the primary action key and raw pressing rate has a direct effect on play, and it has since become a benchmark in its own right. Ten seconds is the standard interval, and the clock starts on your first press.
How to Play
Tap the arena as fast as you can — mobile keyboards have no usable space bar for this.
Press the SPACE key as fast as you can for ten seconds.
Objective & Winning Rules
Record the highest space bar press rate you can sustain across ten seconds.
Spacebar Counter Rules
The test runs for exactly ten seconds, beginning on your first press rather than on load. Every press of the space bar inside the window is counted; holding the key down does not register repeats, so key-repeat cannot be used to inflate the count.
Your score is total presses divided by ten, giving presses per second, stored multiplied by a hundred so two decimals survive as a whole number.
On a touch device there is no usable space bar, so tapping the arena is counted instead. The measurement is the same and results remain comparable.
Spacebar Counter Strategy
Use two thumbs, not one finger
The single biggest gain available. One finger tapping a space bar is limited by how fast that finger can return to position. Alternating two thumbs, or two fingers from opposite hands, roughly halves the travel each one has to make and commonly takes a player from around six presses per second to nine or ten without any extra effort.
Press the edge, not the centre
A space bar is a long key on a stabiliser bar, and the centre has the most travel and the most resistance. Pressing near either end registers with less movement and returns faster. Most people are measurably quicker at the edges once they try it deliberately.
Let the key come back to you
Speed here is limited by key return as much as by key press. Hammering harder does not make the switch reset faster, and it tires you within a few seconds. A light, shallow press that barely passes the actuation point is both faster and sustainable for the full ten seconds.
Know that key rollover is not the limit here
Some keyboards cannot register multiple simultaneous keys, but that does not apply to a single key pressed repeatedly. What can matter is switch type: a light linear switch actuates with less travel than a tactile or clicky one, which is worth a fraction of a press per second at the top end.
Set your rhythm before the clock starts
Because timing begins on the first press, you can settle into the motion mentally beforehand and start already at pace. Players who begin cold typically lose most of a second finding their rhythm, which on a ten-second test is a full ten percent of the result.

Spacebar Counter — Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good spacebar score?
Most people land between six and eight presses per second on their first attempts. With two-thumb technique, nine to eleven is achievable. Consistently above twelve is genuinely fast.
Why do people test their spacebar speed?
It started with games where space is the main action key — jumping, boosting, or timing a rhythm input — and raw press rate has a visible effect on play. It has since become a standalone benchmark people compare for its own sake.
Can I hold the key down instead?
No. Only discrete presses are counted, so key repeat contributes nothing. The test measures how many times you actually actuate the key.
Does the keyboard matter?
A little. A light linear switch actuates with less travel than a tactile or clicky one, which is worth a fraction of a press per second at the top of the range. Below that, technique matters far more than hardware.
How do I take this test on a phone?
Tap the arena instead. Mobile keyboards have no space bar you can hit at speed, so tapping is substituted and the measurement stays comparable.
Why ten seconds?
It is long enough that rhythm and technique decide the outcome rather than a short burst, and short enough that fatigue does not. It is also the window most published figures use, so results are comparable.
