Objective & Winning Rules
Build all 4 suit foundations from Ace to King in Klondike, or clear all 8 full-suit runs from King to Ace in Spider Solitaire.
Solitaire Royale Rules
Klondike is played with a standard 52-card deck dealt into three areas. The tableau is seven columns holding one to seven cards, only the last of each turned face up. The stock is what remains, drawn from during play. The four foundations start empty, and filling them is how you win.
You win by building all four foundations up from Ace to King in a single suit each. Cards move to a foundation in strict ascending order — the Ace first, then the 2 of that suit, and so on.
Within the tableau, cards build downward in alternating colours: a black 7 accepts a red 6, which accepts a black 5. You can move a single card or an ordered run of them together. Turning up a face-down card is the main way a column makes progress, and an emptied column is a free space that accepts a King, or a run headed by a King, and nothing else.
When the tableau offers nothing, you draw from the stock. Draw-1 turns a single card and is markedly more forgiving; draw-3 turns three at a time and only exposes the top one, which restricts what you can reach and is the standard for scored play. Both are available here.
Solitaire Royale Strategy
Turn face-down cards before anything else
Every face-down card in the tableau is information you do not have, and information is the real currency in Klondike. When two moves are otherwise equal, take the one that flips a card. In particular, prefer flipping in the longest columns early — those are where the deepest unknowns sit, and leaving them until late is how a game runs out of options with the board apparently still healthy.
Do not rush cards to the foundation
It feels like progress and it is frequently a mistake. A card sent to the foundation can no longer accept anything in the tableau, so sending a red 6 up early may strand the black 5 that needed it. Send Aces and 2s immediately, since they can never be useful below, but hold higher cards in play as long as they are still doing work.
Empty a column only when you have a King ready
An empty column is the most valuable asset in the game, but it is only an asset while you can fill it deliberately. Emptying a column with no King available to occupy it often means it sits idle, or gets filled by the first King that happens along rather than the one that unlocks the most. Plan the King before you clear the space.
Draw-3 needs a cycle plan
In draw-3 the stock exposes only every third card on a given pass, and which cards those are shifts each time you cycle. If a card you need is buried, count the position rather than cycling blindly — playing a different card from the waste first changes the alignment on the next pass and can bring the one you want to the top.
Prefer the move that keeps the most options open
When two cards can take the same slot, take it with the one whose column has fewer face-down cards remaining. That leaves the deeper column with more ways to make progress later. Klondike punishes moves that were fine in isolation and closed off a line you needed three moves on.
Recognise a dead game early
Not every deal is winnable. Estimates for draw-3 Klondike with perfect play sit somewhere around eight in ten deals being theoretically solvable, and human play lands well below that. When the stock has cycled with no new move available and no face-down card can be reached, the deal is over — recognising that quickly is worth more than grinding a lost position.

Solitaire Royale — Frequently Asked Questions
What are the rules of Klondike Solitaire?
Build the four foundations up from Ace to King in matching suits. In the tableau, build down in alternating colours. Empty columns take Kings only, and the stock supplies cards when the tableau stalls.
What is the difference between draw-1 and draw-3?
Draw-1 turns one stock card at a time, so every card is reachable on every pass. Draw-3 turns three and exposes only the top one, which limits access and makes the game considerably harder. Draw-3 is the traditional scored version.
Can every Solitaire deal be won?
No. A meaningful fraction of deals are unwinnable no matter how well they are played. Published analysis puts solvable draw-3 deals at roughly eight in ten under perfect play, and real play well below that, so losing a hand is often the deal rather than the player.
Which cards can go on an empty column?
Only a King, or an ordered run with a King at its head. That restriction is why an empty column is worth planning for rather than creating by accident.
Should I always move Aces to the foundation?
Yes, immediately. Aces and 2s can never be built on within the tableau, so they cost nothing to send up. Higher cards are a different judgement — moving them too early can strand the cards that needed them.
Why can I not move a card onto the same colour?
Klondike builds in alternating colours by design. It is what keeps the tableau from collapsing into trivially long runs and is the constraint that makes the game a puzzle rather than a sorting exercise.
