Objective & Winning Rules
Align 3 symbols on 3x3, 4 symbols on 5x5, or 5 symbols on 15x15 horizontally, vertically, or diagonally before your opponent.
Neon Tic-Tac-Toe & Gomoku Rules
Tic-Tac-Toe is played on a 3x3 grid. Two players alternate placing their mark, X moving first, and the first to complete three in a row horizontally, vertically, or diagonally wins. If all nine squares fill with no line, the game is drawn.
The 3x3 game is solved. With correct play from both sides it is always a draw, and no opening move can force a win against a defender who knows the position. That is not a defect — it is why the game is a useful teaching tool for the idea that some games have a known perfect outcome.
Larger boards are a different game entirely. On 5x5 the target is four in a row, and on 15x15 it is five, which is the game usually called Gomoku or Five in a Row. Expanding the board removes the forced draw and restores genuine depth: Gomoku on a full board has been proven a first-player win with perfect play, but the winning line is far beyond what a human calculates over the board, so real games remain sharp.
Neon Tic-Tac-Toe & Gomoku Strategy
Take the centre on 3x3
The centre square sits on four of the eight winning lines, more than any other cell — a corner sits on three, an edge on two. If you move first, take it. If your opponent takes it, take a corner, because answering a centre opening with an edge is the one reply that loses by force against accurate play.
Play for the double threat
You never win a 3x3 game with a single threat, because a competent opponent simply blocks it. You win by creating two threats in one move, so that blocking one leaves the other open. Every won game of Tic-Tac-Toe is a fork, and every lost one is a fork you failed to see coming.
Block the fork before it exists
Defence is not about blocking the line in front of you; it is about denying the square that would create two lines at once. When your opponent has two marks on opposite corners, the forcing reply is to take an edge rather than the remaining corner — taking the corner hands them the fork.
On Gomoku, count open threes
On the 15x15 board the fundamental unit is the open three: three of your stones in a row with empty points at both ends. It threatens to become an open four, which cannot be blocked at both ends and therefore wins. Creating two open threes at once is the standard winning pattern, and stopping your opponent's open threes is most of your defensive work.
Do not chase on large boards
The commonest Gomoku mistake is answering every enemy stone locally and never building anything. Blocking is only mandatory against a genuine threat — an open three or a four. Against anything less, a move that develops your own shape is usually worth more than a defensive stone.
Use the smaller boards as a warm-up
The 5x5 four-in-a-row board sits between the two extremes: large enough that the forced draw disappears, small enough that you can still hold the whole position in your head. It is the fastest way to build the pattern recognition Gomoku demands, because the same motifs appear -- open threes, double threats, the value of a central stone -- at a scale where you can actually see why a move worked. Players who jump straight from 3x3 to 15x15 usually flounder for a while; the intermediate board removes that gap.

Neon Tic-Tac-Toe & Gomoku — Frequently Asked Questions
Can you always win at Tic-Tac-Toe?
No. The 3x3 game is solved, and perfect play from both sides always draws. You can only win if your opponent errs — which is why strong play means creating positions where an error is easy to make.
What is the best first move?
The centre. It lies on four of the eight possible winning lines, against three for a corner and two for an edge. Against an opponent who plays perfectly it still only draws, but it maximises the chance of an exploitable mistake.
What is a fork in Tic-Tac-Toe?
A move that creates two winning threats at once, so your opponent can only block one. It is the sole way to win the 3x3 game, and every decisive result comes from one side making a fork the other could have prevented.
How is Gomoku different from Tic-Tac-Toe?
Gomoku is played on a 15x15 board and needs five in a row instead of three. The larger board eliminates the forced draw and creates real strategic depth, built around threats like the open three and the open four.
What is an open three?
Three stones in a row with empty points at both ends. It threatens to become an open four, which has two winning continuations and therefore cannot be stopped — so an open three usually has to be answered immediately.
Who wins Gomoku with perfect play?
The first player, on a standard unrestricted board. That result has been established by computer analysis, but the winning method is far beyond human calculation over the board, so competitive games stay genuinely contested.
